Pasadena to LAX — Car Service for Airport Transfers

Pasadena is one of the longer runs to LAX in the greater Los Angeles area, and that distance has a direct impact on how you need to plan the trip. At roughly 28 to 32 miles depending on your specific address, the route crosses through some of the most variable traffic corridors in the city — the 110 through downtown, the 105 interchange, and the final approach into the airport. On a good morning you’re looking at 40 to 55 minutes. On a bad afternoon, this trip can take close to two hours.

JM Transportation Services handles the Pasadena to LAX corridor regularly — Old Town pickups, CalTech guests, Rose Bowl visitors, residents from the surrounding foothill communities. We know this route and we know how to time it.

How it works

The Distance and Why It Matters

The 28-to-32-mile range isn’t an approximation for lack of better data — it’s because Pasadena is a spread-out city. A pickup from Old Town Pasadena on Colorado Boulevard sits at one mileage. A pickup from Caltech on California Boulevard is slightly different. A home in the San Rafael Hills above the 134 freeway adds yet another starting point. When you call for a quote, your exact address determines the precise fare.

What doesn’t change is the fundamental geography: Pasadena is northeast of downtown LA, and LAX is southwest. Every route option has to cross through or around the city center, which is why the 110 freeway plays such a central role.

Route Options from Pasadena to LAX

I-10 West to I-405 South

An alternative route that goes west before going south. From Pasadena you connect to the 10 westbound via the 110 or surface streets, then take the 405 south to LAX. This adds some distance but avoids the downtown 110 corridor entirely. The problem is the 405 itself, which is heavily congested during the same peak windows. This route works better during off-peak hours — late evening, early morning, or weekends.

I-110 South to I-105 West

This is the preferred route under most conditions. You take the 110 south from Pasadena — which you can access from the 134 interchange — travel through downtown LA and South LA, then pick up the 105 westbound toward LAX. The 110/105 interchange is one of the better-designed freeway connections in Los Angeles. It flows. The 105 itself is a dedicated airport corridor with fewer surface street interruptions than alternatives

Traffic on the 110 through downtown is a reality during peak hours. The stretch through the downtown core, particularly around the 10 interchange, can slow significantly during the morning rush (7 to 9:30 a.m.) and the PM peak (4 to 7 p.m.). We account for this in our pickup time recommendations.

Under clear conditions: 40 to 55 minutes. With moderate traffic: 60 to 80 minutes. Heavy peak-hour traffic: 90 to 110 minutes. For any morning flight, we typically recommend scheduling a pickup 2.5 hours before departure from a Pasadena address.

Business Travelers and the Convention Center Corridor

Street, just north of the 10 freeway. When a major convention is in town — and there’s usually something — the surrounding blocks experience a concentrated surge of departures over a 24-hour window as the event ends. Law conferences, medical conventions, tech expos, trade shows. All of these generate airport transfer demand at scale.

If you’re a convention organizer or a business managing group travel from a downtown event, our vehicles seat up to six passengers each. Multiple trips, coordinated timing, and a consistent pickup process are all manageable with advance planning. Contact us before the event to establish a schedule.

The Crypto.com Arena generates its own travel demand — especially on nights when a major event draws visitors from out of town who have a flight the next morning. South Park hotel guests often need early morning transfers after late-night events.
